Our Story

Our story begins long before 2014.

With experience in tourism dating back to 1996, founders Dionísio and Rui always knew that their future would be connected to the sea, the mountains, and the wild beauty of the Azores. After studying abroad and gaining international experience, they felt the call of home. They returned to their islands with a clear vision: to create a family-run company that would allow visitors to experience the Azores not as tourists, but as friends.

Born and raised in the Azores, they founded Azores Adventure Islands in 2014 with a simple yet powerful idea — to share the same authentic adventures they had grown up living.

In the beginning, it was just the two of them… and canyoning. Armed with ropes, wetsuits, and an unstoppable passion for nature, they guided small groups through waterfalls and volcanic landscapes, offering raw, genuine experiences in some of the most untouched corners of the islands.

But like any true adventure, the journey quickly evolved.

In 2015, the family grew. Two close friends, André Medeiros and André Gouveia, joined the project, strengthening the team and bringing new energy and ideas. What started as a small dream among friends began to take shape as a solid and growing adventure company.

By 2016, the range of activities expanded. Kayaking, Stand Up Paddle, and Mountain Biking (BTT) were introduced, allowing guests to explore the islands from the ocean to the highest trails. That same year, the company helped introduce e-bikes to the Azores’ adventure scene, opening the door for more people to discover the islands’ landscapes in a sustainable and accessible way.

Growth came naturally — and responsibly. With an expanding team and improved conditions, 2020 marked another milestone. Just before the global reality of COVID-19 reshaped the world, the company moved into a larger space, reinforcing its commitment to professionalism, safety, and quality service.

Today, Azores Adventure Islands is supported by a stable team of local residents who share the founders’ vision and values. Every guide, every smile, every adventure is rooted in a deep love for these islands.

More than an adventure company, we are storytellers of our land.

When you explore with us, you are not just discovering the Azores — you are experiencing them through the eyes of those who call them home.

Sustainability at Azores Adventure Islands

Sustainability is not a trend for us — it is part of who we are.

We were born and raised on the Azores, we understand that our greatest asset is nature itself. The ocean, waterfalls, forests, and volcanic landscapes that shape the Azores are not just our workplace — they are our home. Taking care of them is both our duty and our promise. It guides every choice we make.

For us, sustainability isn’t a department. It’s simply the way we live, work, and explore.

Caring for Nature

We work in ways that protect the environment and reduce our impact.

We try to use less water and energy in our daily operations. For example, we collect rainwater to wash our equipment, which helps save fresh water. We also use biodegradable cleaning products, so they don’t harm nature.

We carefully plan our transportation and look after our equipment to reduce emissions and make everything last longer. We introduced e-bikes early on to offer a cleaner, low-impact way to explore the island while making adventure accessible to more people.

During our tours, we also teach guests how to respect nature — from staying on trails to protecting wildlife and marine life. We believe awareness leads to long-term protection.

Our goal is simple: to grow responsibly, reduce our carbon footprint, and continue lowering our impact on the environment.

Supporting the Local Economy

Sustainability also means helping our community grow.

We prioritize hiring local people, especially those born and raised on the island. Our team doesn’t just have professional skills — they have a deep connection to this land.

Whenever possible, we work with local suppliers and services. By keeping our investments on the island, we help ensure that tourism truly benefits the community.

We believe in steady, responsible growth — expanding only when we are ready, rather than chasing quick results.

Putting People First

People are at the heart of everything we do.

We see ourselves as ambassadors of the Azores. When we share our island, we also share our culture, stories, and traditions. Our team is built on trust, friendship, and a family spirit that we extend to our guests.

We create inclusive experiences and adapt activities to different abilities and needs. Adventure should be safe, accessible, and meaningful for everyone.

By caring for nature, supporting the local economy, and valuing people, we create experiences that benefit not only our visitors — but also our community and future generations.
