Scenic North-to-South Cycling Tour of São Miguel

Begin your ride close to the highest part of São Miguel Island and bike through beautiful sceneries. Enjoy the endemic plants and Japanese cedar forests. After a stop for lunch we ride to the beautifull road of tronqueira to cross the Island from Nordeste (North) to Povoação (South). Throughout this road we’ll experience ever changing views to Pico da Vara, the highest peak of the Island.

Once we unload the bikes and get geared up we’ll start going through São Miguel’s only plateau, home to one of the few remaining patches of endemic forest. Just before descending to the shore line and onto lunch we will be contemplated with a glimpse of Pico da Vara to the east and Nordeste’s rugged shore line to the north. After lunch (after a short car shuttle) it is time to ride the road of Tronqueira and its characteristic red gravel. Winding through valleys and mountains we’ll find ourselves on the territory of the Azorean Bullfinch (Priolo) an elusive endemic bird, just before heading towards the finish which will be by the ocean at Povoação.
